Recap

The Brits were in action this Halloween weekend in foggy Moratalaz with arguably their toughest assignment of the season so far against a strong Banco de España side who held the men in red to a draw in their last meeting.

Britanicos started well and went ahead through Foxy who ghosted into the area and finished smartly into the bottom corner after some neat play down the left. Banco on the other hand, were moving the ball around nicely in the middle third, but without much penetration. FCB were forced to make an early change after Dutch defender Dorus went down off the ball with a thigh injury, he was replaced by Macca. Both sides struggled to create chances from open play, and the best opportunities for the rest of the first half were from set pieces. Banco had an effort cleared off the line by a well placed Sean McBride, and FCB went close from the head of Zak Harry from an inswinging corner.

Just before the interval though, a quickly taken free-kick found Luigi in space, and the Venezuelan summoned up some of his trademark witchcraft to get clear of two defenders and get a shot on goal. The spooked Banco goalie could only parry the effort into the path of Zak, who got his 15th goal of the campaign with a tap in.

The second half saw much of the same from the hosts who continued to build up play in the middle third before seeking the pace of their young striker off the FCB backline. Despite their bloodthirsty appetite for goals, Banco came up against a defensive unit in fine form and marshalled by the impressive Rama, who was voted man of the match for the third successive game here after utterly dominating the space in front of him. FCB on the other hand remained dangerous when countering, and fashioned numerous chances which the front men weren’t quite able to capitalise on. As the game drew to a close, Luigi (whose tricks are always a treat to watch) was replaced by his compatriot Jose, and the Brits worked hard to keep their shape and try to maintain possession against an opponent who were finding a final pass difficult to conjure.

Inspired by the managers mainly positive words (“up it up!”), the Brits held strong and limited the locals to pot shots from distance. A deserved 2-0 win and midday drinking session the final result of the hard work, discipline and improving tactical awareness of Majid’s men. The rest of the league have been given a good fright.
