Recap
Fresh off the back of their opening victory in the Bunwer Clausura against AAPLA, FCB headed into their first home match of the Clausura against Unión Selección. Although FCB had beaten them comprehensively only a couple of weeks earlier, FCB knew that Unión would come with a much stronger team. The previous match had been a dead rubber with Unión knowing that whatever the result, their position in the table would not change.
Rami had a large squad to choose from with only EQ missing through injury and was forced to make some painful decisions when naming his squad. He selected a strong starting 11 of
Max
Pete, Max & Dorus
Joe S, Calum, Antonio, Padraig, Ed
Lewis, Harry
With the warm-up completed under the watchful eye of new assistant-assistant coach Joe Price, FCB were ready.
Straight from the kick-off FCB tried to impose themselves on the opposition with some slick passing and fast back to front transitions, leaving the Unión midfield chasing shadows. The Unión keeper pulled off a string of fine saves denying Lewis, Harry and Calum. Eventually the opposition’s resistance was eventually broken with some fine play that started at the back. Max collected the ball from a Unión free-kick, spotted Lewis on the run and released the ball to him out on the left. Lewis drove into midfield shrugging off a defender before sidestepping another and then slotting the ball away from the edge of the box with a fine strike.
FCB continued with wave after wave of attack and they were rewarded just before half-time with another for the milky bar kid. Calum’s deflected shot rebounded off the opposition defender, wrong footing the keeper who managed to tip it onto the post but Lewis reacted fastest from 4 yards to put the ball away for his second of the game.
HALF TIME
The second half started off with the opposition having a completely different mentality. They were more positive on the ball and starting to drag the FCB midfield across the pitch leaving holes behind but the opposition failed to take advantage as FCB defending sternly and frustrated them. It was backs to the wall for FCB and eventually their resistance was ground down on 63 minutes when a hopeful attempted lob from the right wing fooled Max, he managed to tip the ball but unfortunately not with enough power and the ball went over his head. The FCB defence was caught napping and the opposition striker got to the ball first, tapping into an empty net from 2 yards.
FCB were angry and got back into their normal game with more waves attack on the opposition goal. The opposition were resorting to trying to hit the FCB defence on the counter-attack but the younger fitter FCB defence dealt with all the threat, in fact, Dorus’ hair didn’t even get messed up.
The game swung back into FCB’s favour in the 84th minute when Eric was taken down on the edge of the box. Lewis lined up the freekick and his shot deflected off the legs of the opposition wall, wrongfooting the keeper and rolling into the bottom corner.
With the points more or less in the bag, Rami made changes up front and FCB saw out the game to bag a deserved three points.
MOM: Calum & Pete
DOD: Max for the lob.
