Recap

Another beautiful spring day, another 6:30 alarm and another Clausura game deep in a suburb the expats would otherwise have never laid eyes on. This week’s opponents were the somewhat confusingly named Guernika Fraher who before the match began sat one place behind the Brits and would have been confident of a home win going into this one.

Few absentees and the return to the technical area of his indomitable Mancunian sidekick made Rami visibly more chirpy than previous weeks as the referee would be finding out throughout the first half. The lucky XI chosen by the gaffer for the task of wrestling the 3 points back to Madrid were: Josue, Nate, Rama, Ricky, Ed (back 5). Ben, Fabian, Tally (Midfield). David Kane, Sean and Luigi (Attack).

After tactical instruction on the training ground in the week FCB were looking to spring into life on the counter attack against a technically adept but veteran side. Having overcome the twin nemeses of Brits in Spain (a sunburn and hangover caused by all day drinking), Dave Kane’s availability made this tactic much more feasible, and the first goal of the game came after good work down his wing with the pink Scot setting up Luigi for the first goal of a productive afternoon for the away side. The same formula worked for Sean to stab home minutes later as FCB went 2-0 to the good. Guernika looked decent in possession and got back in the game through a well-directed free kick into Josue’s net after 30 minutes. The opposition however clearly could not handle the pace of the former Forfar man or the lightning counter-attacks of their younger opponents, and the defender tasked with controlling Kane was lucky not to escape a direct red for a shocking tackle as the Brits broke down the right once more. No theatrics from a rightly upset Kane, but protestations from the bench meant Dorus earned himself a direct red without kicking a ball as well as some man of the match votes for getting ‘chulo’ with the ref. The resulting free kick, by the way, was expertly dispatched beyond his own keeper by the opposition centre-half as Sean whipped a delightful low ball into the corridor of uncertainty.

3-1 up at half time but not content to let the game drift, the expats took to the field for the second half knowing that the quality on the ball of their opposition and a fed up referee who was clearly taking anything said in English as a personal insult could still ruin their day. The fourth goal arrived quite quickly after some nice work from veteran midfielder Tally (who put in a calm and measured display throughout) to set up man of the moment ‘Angry’ Dave Kane to finish neatly and celebrate exuberantly. Guernika Fraher, however, were still seeing a lot of the ball and clearly did not believe that the game was over, and they duly fashioned a way back into the contest after a clever ball over the top put through their winger who showed desire and no little skill to finish over Josue for 4-2. The day, however, belonged to one hungover, red, quick man and soon after the Flying Scotsman latched onto yet another ball played into space, rounded the keeper and put the contest out of reach for the team from Coslada. His hat trick was to follow minutes later in similar fashion as a ball was clipped over the defence from right back and the express pace of the Doctor saw him beat the covering defence again for 6-2. Rami had by now emptied the bench (apart from one devilishly handsome Dutchman) and Clement, Macca, Calum and Pete enjoyed the final coup de grace as Dave set up Foxy to smash home a confidence boosting goal for 7-2 and round off a superb away performance and earn the lads some post match beers in the sun.
