Saturday saw FCB Britanico travel to Vallecas to take on Cervezas Mahou. The reverse fixture saw a 5-5 draw and a frenzied and uncontrolled display by the lads and Rami was looking for more discipline in possession from his team this time out. The starting lineup selected to bring home the three points was as below:

Jorge
Josh, Gonzalo, Macca, Ed
Erik, Michael T
Vico, Calum, Ish
Lewis

The pitch was in beautiful condition and the boys quickly established dominance in midfield and were looking to play the ball forward early to take advantage of a veteran Mahou back line’s lack of pace. Fifteen minutes in FCB were ahead on the scoresheet as Gonzalo broke up play and passed to Ed who turned and played up the line to Ish who got lucky with a ricochet and burst clear to square for Lewis who was unmarked and made no mistake. Two-nil came soon after as Lewis turned provider for Vico to slot past the Maou keeper and give Majid’s men a cushion.

More chances were to follow as Lewis shot at the keeper and Erik took a big air-swing at a rebound from a well saved Vico free-kick, the boys couldn’t extend the lead before half-time though and went into the break two to the good having conceded few chances in defence.

No changes at the half from Majid who wanted greater control from his charges and more clinical finishing in front of goal (when doesn’t he want this?). There were some balletic runs from young Vico and some nice play from Erik and Calum in midfield, but the third goal ultimately came from a hoof up the field from defence and an error by the Mahou centre-back which let Vico in to give the score a healthy glow. 3-0 now and seemingly cruising, FCB then gave the opposition a glimmer of hope as Ed got sucked under a Mahou goal kick and lost the header meaning he was out of position and had to run back at the forward who was bearing down on Gonzalo. Between them, the two FCB lads thought they had corralled and boxed in the opposition striker, but he managed a magnificent toe-poked finish right into the bottom corner.

The error wasn’t to prove costly though as FCB were back down the other end shortly after with Vico making the opposition goalie look silly by sitting him down and dinking it over him for 4-1. At this point, Rami made some substitutions with Lara coming on and new-boy Tom making a first appearance. Also making a first appearance since injury was fan-favourite Briggers who ended up missing a penalty when the ball was batted out of the top corner by a Mahou defender from Lewis’s shot. The Welshman unselfishly gave the penalty to everybody’s favourite pilot who did his best Gareth Southgate circa 1996 impression to lols from the bench.

There was time for one more goal though as Calum got space on the left side of the box and squared for Vico who, seemingly competing with Lewis for the least selfish striker award, let the ball run to Ed up from fullback who tapped in at the back post.

A decent performance away from home from the lads who remain in the chasing pack.

Man of the Match: Briggers (really it was Gonzalo, but it’s funnier this way)
Goal of the Match: Vico Sanchez
Dick of the Day: Vico Sanchez
Quote of the Day: Rami to his attacking players: “I see you boys as the three musketeers.”
