An unseasonably warm Saturday morning and an agreeable kick off time of 11:00 AM made for the prospect of another enjoyable day in the Bunwer League for the 2015/16 Apertura champions as they took on a mid-table side who have proved stubborn opposition in previous campaigns. Amiviajes came into the match having come close to an upset against Bar la Piscina a couple of weeks ago and played in their customary blue and white kits, whilst FC Britanico lined up in red and white sporting a few personnel changes from the previous week on the insistence of gaffer Majid. Jorge retained the number one jersey with last season’s starting keeper Josue still only just back in training after injury; Harry, Ricky, Macca and Rama made up the backline with Christoffer and Calum in central midfield, the London-bound Sean started on the left and chemical enthusiast Dr David Kane was in his customary berth on the right. Luigi and Joe were playing in the forward positions and hoping to renew their rivalry for the golden boot by getting on the scoresheet.
The early stages of this encounter were characterised by loose passes and a lot of ineffective crossing into the box from the home team. The step up in quality of the opposition from previous weeks perhaps resulting in a certain level of hubris from the boys who often looked for a killer pass too soon in the move. Despite the reluctance to recycle possession, it wasn’t long before they were in front thanks to a mistake by the opposition fullback and a calm finish from Joe. They were very nearly pegged back though after the illusive Amiviajes number 10 did very well to sprint through a gap between the defence and chip over the onrushing Jorge only to see a moment of pure bathos as the ball was miraculously cleared over the bar just one metre from the goal-line. The only unusual thing here being that for some reason known only to himself, the clearance wasn’t made by Brits defender but by the hapless strike partner of the man who had just chipped Jorge! Not only was the ball definitely heading into the back of the net, but in inexplicably blasting it over the bar the Amiviajes player negated the whole move by being in an offside position. The relief and laughter on the bench soon gave way to regret that nobody would be becoming a Youtube millionaire as Graeme had not had his camera rolling.
The second half saw Oscar and Ed take to the field for Macca and Luigi and within ten minutes the former would be slamming a loose ball into the back of the net from 6 yards after the men in blue had failed to clear their lines. 2-0 and a tiring opponent meant that FCB started to smell blood, and like the lion on the club badge, they stalked their weary pray around the pitch until pouncing for a third goal. A corner was cleared only as far as Ed who whipped a ball into a dangerous area where Rama, as is customary this season, was on hand to get to the ball ahead of the defender and smash the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle in front of his adoring public in the bleachers. Number four was to follow soon after when two substitutes combined nicely, Jordan setting up Matt to unleash a curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box and round off a nice win for the lads who will hope to take their good form into a crucial game next week against fierce rivals Bar Castilla.
