A lot of noise was being made about this fixture. Quite literally, from the sideline, as the fellow high flyers Canillejas decided to come and watch Británicos and enjoy a few ales. They maintained a volatile relationship with striker H, initially with some abusive taunts that quickly changed tact when this was clearly having the effect of making our number 9 play better. Come every week if you want lads. H was key assist maker in the opening goal as he whipped a trademark cross across the six yard box for Padraig to competently place it home.

Erick ‘the mule’ Quevedo had spent the days prior to the game flying across borders to deliver packages for the Guatamalia (J.Simmons 2023) elite. This clearly had a performance enhancement effect on himself and his midfield comrades Mats and Calum. As the first half developed, all 3 players enjoyed plenty of the ball and were connecting well with a back 4 of Luigi, Arren, Josh and Ed. This was ably supported by the excellent distribution from Marco in goal. Padraig was becoming increasingly influential and it was his corner that was met by Josh; it was ‘press repeat’ in the second half when Josh headed home firmly from another high quality corner.

The second half started with an extremely dubious penalty for Los Olmos. Had the ref spent the spent the early afternoon in Argayo with Jose and Calvito? Josh controlled the ball with the hip for it to be deemed hand ball. Los Olmos slotted their second pen of the day with aplomb. It was to be a momentary momentum swing as Británicos quickly re established dominance. Changes brought fresh energy through Carlos, Macca, Antonio and Gonza. Even Simmo made a few telling contributions after he established control over his anxiety spreading behavior and his weekly dodgy first touch. In fairness, he had spent the previous 10 minutes taking notes on the warm up which was now also taking place simultaneously on the pitch. Even so, Callum was now running things in midfield as the scoreline started to resemble a good first session in test match cricket. Both Harry and Padraig completed hat tricks and EQ added one to cap off excellent performances.

The game finished 10-2 and the Británicos could be satisfied with their bouncebackability and a greater degree of focus, organisation and quality. It was the first half performance which really established control against a Los Olmos team that were probably a shade better than the scoreline suggests. Firmer tests lie ahead but this was an excellent afternoons work which was rightly celebrated with a few jarras and the captain getting stuck into several bottles of cheap crianza.
