The form side in the league since the start of the new year. Regularly putting five or six goals past their opponents and looking defensively sound. Refreshed after a much-needed winter break. Back in a title race when before it looked all but over…what a start to 2024 Arsenal are having!
Considering their form in 2024, an onlooker wouldn’t be laughed at for thinking the FC Britanico squad also took a winter sojourn in Dubai to de-stress and rebuild for the end of season run-in. Instead they were scattered around the globe (mainly in and around northwest England); but wherever they went, it worked.
FCB continued their scintillating run this year with a ruthless display against once-bogey team Altamira. Putting five past an opposition to which they drew earlier in the season.
The game started tentatively but FCB were always on top. That being said, the boys in red (away kit due to sock and shorts colour clash) failed to create many clear-cut chances.
Normally clinical Harry hit the post from close range, and some crosses flashed across the face of the box, but it was not til a quarter of the way into the game that the deadlock was broken when in-form forward Padraig emphatically netted a penalty after captain Cal was brought down inside the box.
‘One brings two’ is the sort of thing you say when you’re getting thrashed at cricket, but this was the case today as almost immediately after play resumed Cal and Padg linked up again with the latter delicately lobbing the ball over the keeper’s head after the skipper turned and put through a beautiful ball over the top.
The score remained at 2-0 at half-time, and although FCB knew they were on top, they were also aware that the next goal was vital.
That goal came 15 minutes into the half when Harry pounced on a loose ball in the box and proved just how reliable he is as a goalscorer.
Throughout this time FCB were keeping the ball well and, dare I say it, completely dominating Altamira. Mats and Yaron were controlling midfield and defenders Arren, Omar and Josh were dispelling any threats that their attack posed.
A change was made, Mats coming off and Ed coming on at left back and Will moving into midfield.
Will capitalised on this more advanced role after being put through following a mazey Calum run and doing all he could with his right foot swinger to put it past the keeper and put FCB 4-0 up.
Quickly after Josh, Arren, Harry and Yaron were replaced by EQ, Karlos, Paco and Luigi – it is a testament to this FCB squad that the standards fail to drop when these changes are made.
Finally, Padraig finished off this hattrick after running from the left and slotting it past a diving Altamira goalkeeper who had played very well all game.
The machine rumbles on, the tough games keep coming thick and fast, and FCB look in no mood to slow down.
