A blustery day at Las Colcheras saw FC Britanico take on perennial title challengers and fierce rivals Union Seleccion in the latest round of the Bunwer Apertura 2019-20. The comparative luxury of a 10:30 kick off more than made up for the blowy conditions and there was no need for the fines committee to mark the ledger for latecomers. There were more than enough ganas to go around for this top of the table clash to get everyone out of bed. The squad at Rami’s disposal for this one was perhaps as strong a group of players as this storied club has ever had the luxury of calling on, and no doubt the manager lost a few hours of sleep deciding upon his starting XI

Dorus  Gonzalo  Jimmy

Chema

Vico  Lewis

An unusually focused and intense warm up was followed by a somewhat nervy first twenty minutes from the lads as they struggled to control the game in the face of vastly experienced opponents. Whether it was a touch going slightly wrong, not having an angle to shoot, or being closed down effectively by the veterans facing them in black and white, one way or another FCB contrived to keep the Union goalie cold as they limited him to a few goal kicks for the first half an hour or so. Although worthy of a passing mention here, the shameless antics of the talented opposition striker were certainly not worthy of anything more than the aprobrium and disdain they received from the men in red in this period of the game (and throughout).

A cagey opening without notable incidents was brought to its conclusion on 40 minutes by a moment of magic from a young man with a wand for a left foot. Seeing the opposition in a state of flux at a corner, Vico received it short from Erik before decisively whipping the ball into the top corner from the tightest of angles. 1-0 up soon turned into 2-0 as the Union defence were caught out by a through ball and Captain Cal stole a march on them and slotted beyond the keeper.

Without changes or complacency, FCB took to the turf in the second half determined to come away with the win. With defensive midfielder Chema among those on yellow cards by now, it was always going to be a case of balancing aggression with pragmatism, and that balance was struck perfectly for the next twenty minutes. The Brits play best at a high tempo, and did so here in bursts to test their older opposition’s fitness. The other aspect that typically needs to be cultivated in these big games is concentration. Tested with various stoppages and acts of shithousery, FC Britanico’s concentration on this occasion spoke of the obvious collective will to make this season a special one. The opposition could not convert the one moment they had in front of goal; their winger getting in between Brit centre backs before sending the cross directed to him over Jorge’s bar.

The game was killed as a contest on around 70 minutes when a lovely flowing move down the left saw a cutback finished off by Erik, the American arriving nicely in the box from midfield and side-footing beyond a sprawled keeper.

By this point the game was stretched and Rami brought on the frightening pace of Dom and new man Will to run in behind and harry defenders. There were minor chances for both sides before the final whistle, but honestly, if this reporter can’t remember them having been on the pitch himself, then they can’t have been very exciting and so along with the post-game bickering (and scuffle), I’ll leave them out of this report.

Britanicos ended up with a 3-0 win. A great result.

Man of the Match: Dorus.  Always plays well in these games and really grew into this one!
Goal of the Match: Vico. Special hit.
Dick of the Day: Probably can’t say for legal reasons. Chat shat..
