Matchday 9 saw Majid’s charges head to Rayo Vallecano’s training ground to face Cervezas Mahou. Don’t let the name fool you though, these guys weren’t just a bunch of hungover brewers, they had reinforced their ranks from last season and were looking for an upset against the men in yellow.

The first half started with little quality from either side until new signing David Kane, who was a livewire all match, was able to poke home a rebound. There was no time for the Rami and Fleck to drink in the sweet taste of the goal though, as shortly afterwards the score was levelled. Carlsberg don’t do goals, but if they did they would be screamers unleashed from 30 yards into the top corner with the keeper helplessly looking on. Mahou on the other hand do do goals and that is exactly how they got back on terms.

The game was fairly even in terms of possession at this point with the FCB midfield looking to switch quickly to Sean and the pacy David on the wings, and the Beer Men relying on guile and clever movement to try and drag the Brits’ defence out of position. Some neat play down the left before halftime lead to Luigi receiving the ball in the box and doing what he does best (working a small space into a big one) and then doing what he does worst delightfully well (curling the ball into the top bin with his RIGHT foot).

After some wise words from goalkeeper Josue at half time, FCB headed out with 3 point withdrawal symptoms still nagging at them from last week. Fortunately, the men from the brewery were tiring and were picked off by the switching and slicing Brits like a fresh loaf of Hovis. Luigi capping a superb display with a neat left-foot finish after a delightful crisp first-time pass from Zak. The Britanicos skipper would get on the scoresheet shortly afterwards when the brewery couldn’t organise their defence and looked pissed up when Sean floated a delightful cross onto the rapidly receding hairline of his captain who duly obliged for 4-1.

Brits continued to dominate, and Majid was able to empty the bench and try people in unorthodox positions as the punch drunk brewers didn’t muster a shot on target. A pleasing win for FCB who are now back on track and can enjoy a well-earned pint or 6.
